고원건 교수님은 The Pennsylvania State University 화공생명공학과에서 생체재료를 세부전공으로 하여 2004년 "Microfabrication of cell-based biosensor arrays using hydrogel microstructures“ 라는 논문 제목으로 박사학위를 받으셨다. 박사학위 후 2004년에서 2005년까지 Stanford University 의과대학과 화공생명공학과에서 Postdoctoral Scholar로 재직하시면서 인공각막 제조에 관한 연구를 수행하셨다. 특히 동물세포를 이용한 바이오칩 제조에 관한 연구를 통해 Langmuir 및 Analytical Chemistry와 같은 저명한 저널에 다수의 논문을 게재하였고, 많은 연구자들에 의해 그 논문들이 인용되었다. 현재 관심 연구분야는 MEMS 기술을 이용한 바이오칩 제조 및 하이드로젤 고분자를 이용한 인공생체조직 개발이다.
