Professor Seung-Joo Haam’s team at Yonsei University developed a fusogenic cell-mimetic biosensors to detect influenza A virus via viral membrane fusion
A research team led by Professor Seung-Joo Ham of Yonsei University's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has developed a fused nano sensor that can diagnose various infectious viruses in a rapid, accurate, and high-throughput manner. Over the past two decades, an epidemic of novel viral infectious diseases has been occurring, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 has had a devastating impact on the health, society, and economy of the world's population. This calls for the development and widespread testing of advanced diagnostic technologies to mitigate outbreaks of infectious diseases caused by new viruses and the initial spread of viruses. In this study, the research team developed a fluorescence assay for the selective and sensitive detection of influenza A virus using liposome-cholesterol fused biomimetic nanosensors. The fused biomimetic nanosensor was designed based on the understanding of the structural features and molecular interactions of influenza A virus infection and was implemented to quantitatively detect the fluorescence signal generated by the membrane fusion of the nanosensor and influenza A virus. In particular, the authors demonstrated that the fusion efficiency of the nanosensor can be improved by controlling the nanostructure membrane stiffness and fluidity to induce an amplified fluorescence signal in the presence of the target virus. Liposomes with low membrane stiffness exhibited more sensitive fusion activity against viruses, while reaching lower detection limits than liposomes with high membrane stiffness. In addition, the fused biomimetic nanosensor also exhibited distress and specific detection of different influenza A virus subtypes in real bird fecal samples, indicating the reliability and alertness of its detection performance. Therefore, this study not only enables quantitative detection of intact influenza A virus without extraction and purification of RNA, but also has great potential for rapid detection and response to emerging infectious viruses that threaten the lives of the world's population. Professor Seung-Joo Haam’s team at Yonsei University developed a rapid point-of-care test platform for African Swine Fever
Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Seung-Joo Haam’s research team developed a rapid point-of-care test platform for African Swine Fever, providing a solution to a major problem in the swine industry. African swine fever (ASF) is caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), a highly contagious and deadly virus. ASFV causes acute and hemorrhagic symptoms and is known to have a fatality rate of 95-100%. Outbreaks of African swine fever not only devastate pig populations around the world, severely impacting human health and food security, but also require the development of diagnostic methods to quickly isolate infected animals as there is no commercially available treatment or vaccine. The point-of-care diagnostic platforms include a portable chromatography device using hybridization chain reaction (HCR) and functional magnetic nanoclusters. This eliminates the need for high-temperature environments and polymerization enzymes, which are necessary conditions for typical gene amplification, effectively reducing the time, labor, and cost of traditional diagnostic methods. In a laboratory environment, the presence or absence of the diagnostic target can be determined by a visual signal in less than 30 minutes and has a very low threshold concentration of 19.8 picomoles. For the diagnosis of African swine fever virus, the research team synthesized DNA-modified magnetic nanoclusters and fabricated a diagnostic kit for affinity chromatography. In this platform, DNA was synthesized as a probe for hybridization with target DNA contained in the virus. If the target DNA is present in the sample, the amplified DNA wraps around the magnetic nanoclusters, reducing the affinity of the sepharose beads distributed in the kit, and passes through without binding, thus determining the presence of the target DNA. In particular, the key to this research is the hybridization chain reaction that occurs between the DNA probe and the target DNA. Although viral diagnostic techniques using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have been studied for years, they should set high-temperature conditions and use enzymes that are sensitive to temperature and environment, requiring expensive equipment and skilled personnel. This study utilized hybridization chain reaction, which does not require enzymes and can be performed at room temperature, as an essential process for the operation of a portable diagnostic kit, and secured related source technology. Professor Seung-Joo Haam of Yonsei University replied, “There is a growing demand for high-performance point-of-care and colorimetric sensors in various fields related to virus detection and diagnosis. ASFV is known to be a highly contagious and deadly virus, so early diagnosis and response are very important. Through this research, we have secured the source technology for the development of a highly sensitive hybridization chain reaction-based colorimetric sensor that can effectively improve the existing virus diagnosis method and is expected to be applied to various disease diagnosis fields in the future.” The research was supported by the Biological Hazard Management Technology Development Project of the Ministry of Environment and the Nanomaterial Technology Development Project, Individual Basic Research Project, and Strategic International Collaborative Research Project of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and was conducted with Hyo Lee (co-first author) and Sojung Lee (co-first author) of Professor Seung-Joo Haam's research team. Professor Jong Hyeok Park’s team at Yonsei University developed an ultrahigh loading dry-process for solvent-free lithium-ion battery electrode fabrication
A research team led by Professor Jong Hyeok Park from Yonsei University's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has developed a new dry electrode process that utilizes a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) - polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder composite as a conductive scaffold for active materials, and an etched aluminum (Al) foil as a current collector. This research presents a new index for the dry electrode process, which is expected to lower manufacturing costs and enhance the sustainability of lithium-ion batteries. The research team found that a dry composite mixture comprised of MWNT and PVDF binders has strong adhesion when attached via hot pressing to an etched aluminum current collector. Based on this finding, the team devised a new "dry press-coating" process that uses MWNT-PVDF composite it as an electrode scaffold and an etched Al foil as a substrate. The electrode made using this process has a structure in which carbon nanotubes are strongly entangled, holding the active material inside the electrode layer while also being fixed to etched current collector pores, resulting in high cohesion and adhesion.Due to these characteristics, as the loading increased, the structure of dry electrode became denser and more concrete when compared to wet electrodes. Micro-CT analysis also confirmed more robust and superior structural stability of the dry electrode compared to the wet electrode. Additionally, the electrochemical performance tests demonstrated that the dry electrode exhibited superior cyclability and rate performance compared to the wet electrode. Moreover, the post-mortem analysis revealed that the dry electrode incorporated cell had remarkably low amount of transition metal dissolution and side reaction between electrolytes. In addition, when the high loading dry electrode was fabricated and applied to a lithium metal pouch cell, 98% of the cathode theoretical capacity was realized in the first cycle, and 85% was maintained after 100 cycles even under high current density condition of 0.5 C. Finally, the research team presented a high energy density(360 Wh/kg and 701 Wh/L) lithium metal pouch cell using an ultra-high loading dry electrode with a maximum electrode loading of 100 mg/cm2.Professor Jong-hyeok Park of Yonsei University said, "This study presented a novel approach to overcome the challenges faced by current dry process techniques and could potentially be used in all-solid-state battery electrode fabrication processes." Professor Yoon Seok Jung's team at Yonsei University developed an air-stable sulfide-based solid electrolyte technology through liquid phase synthesis
Professor Yoon Seok Jung`s research team (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Yonsei University) has developed an air-stable sulfide-based solid electrolyte technology in which tin (Sn) is substituted through liquid phase synthesis, which is the key to mass production. In addition, it was the first time to identify that solid electrolytes manufactured by liquid-phase synthesis have superior deformability compared to conventional solid-state synthesis solid electrolytes, and by utilizing this, low-pressure manufacturing and low-pressure operation of all-solid-state batteries were realized. Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) using organic liquid electrolytes have safety problems such as explosions, so all-solid-state batteries using non-flammable inorganic solid electrolytes are attracting attention. All-solid-state batteries, unlike systems using conventional liquid electrolytes, have all components made of solids. If contact between solid particle is not sufficient, resistance increases, which causes performance degradation. Therefore, high pressure is required in manufacturing and driving process of all-solid-state battery. Among several types of solid electrolytes, sulfide-based solid electrolytes are promising for commercialization of all-solid-state batteries because they have high ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. However, incomplete solid-to-solid contact in electrodes is still a challenge despite having poor mechanical properties. Above all, sulfide-based solid electrolytes are unstable to moisture, and when exposed to the atmosphere, toxic hydrogen sulfide gas is generated, and their performance rapidly deteriorates. Accordingly, studies have been conducted to improve the atmospheric stability of sulfide-based solid electrolytes by substituting metals such as tin (Sn) or antimony (Sb). Professor Yoon Seok Jung`s research team at Yonsei University uses ‘EDA-EDT’ solvent, a mixture of 1,2-ethylenediamine and 1,2-ethanedithiol, to synthesize a liquid phase that can completely dissolve metal sulfide (SnS2) and successfully synthesized an air-stable sulfide-based solid electrolyte (Li3.2P0.8Sn0.2S4) substituted for tin (Sn). The core of this research is to improve the atmospheric stability of the sulfide-based solid electrolyte through the liquid phase process, as well as to manufacture and operate the all-solid-state battery at low pressure according to the improved physical properties of the solid electrolyte. In this study, it was confirmed that the solid electrolyte prepared by the liquid-phase synthesis had greater mechanical deformability than the solid electrolyte prepared by the solid-state synthesis, and this was due to the remaining trace amount of organic matter. Professor Yoon-Seok Jung at Yonsei University replied, “This study is the first to identify that the physical properties of solid electrolytes can vary greatly depending on the synthesis method, and use the solid electrolyte obtained through liquid phase synthesis method, and use the solid electrolyte obtained through liquid phase synthesis to realize low-pressure manufacturing and low-pressure operating for all-solid-state batteries.” This research was conducted with Researcher Jehoon Woo (first author) of Professor Yoon Seok Jung’s research team at Yonse University with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s original technology development project (The program of phased development of carbon neutral technologies), Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s Alchymist Project and Energy Manpower Training Project. The professor Dae Woo Kim’s research team, department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at yonsei university, developed a nanoporous graphene-based membrane with high organic solvent nanofiltration performance which can contribute to reducing price and energy in chemical industrial processes. Separation technology is applied in various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and foods, to purify chemical products and recycle raw materials, which typical purification technologies, including distillation and crystallization, account for 15% of the global industrial energy consumption. In addition, with the growth of the global industry, the use of organic solvents is increasing exponentially, and the demand for high-purity organic solvents is expected to exceed 24,550 k tons by 2023 worldwide, therefore, the demand for technologies for increasing the reuse and purity of organic solvents has been increased. Representatively, for the electronics industry, such as semiconductors, to purify and recycle organic solvents and acidic solutions used in the semiconductor process is expected to be essential for competitive EGS management in the future. Membrane can selectively penetrate solvents and remove large particles only with pressure, in addition, additional heating or chemical reactions are not needed, therefore, it is eco-friendlier and more economical compared to other complex separation technologies. In particular, it is expected that energy savings of up to 90% are possible when a membrane-based separation process is applied. The research team developed a technology to fabricate nanoporous graphene membrane with a rich sp2 carbon structure. Graphene is a material that has a two-dimensional planar structure with an sp2 bonding structure in a honeycomb shape and a thin thickness of an atom. When it is laminated in porous supports, molecular sieving is possible through its interlayer structure, however, the graphene-based membranes are suffered from low solvent permeability, the high manufacturing cost of graphene based on the CVD methods, and difficulty in scalable manufacturing. Accordingly, the research team activated nanopores on the graphene surface by thermal annealing of graphene oxide, which can be conducted in scalable fabrication. Here, graphene oxide is a material made by the oxidation of graphite. The activated nanopores can contribute to the enhancement of solvent permeability, simultaneously, amorphous sp3 carbon domains are generated, which can affect the decreased permeances and rejection rates. Therefore, the research team synthesized highly crystalline nanoporous graphene with rich sp2 carbon domains through microwave treatment. In particular, the key of this study is not only the fabrication of nanoporous graphene with a high density of sp2 carbon domains but also ultrafast solvent permeances and switchable molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of the membrane. This research demonstrated nano-sized ternary organic mixture separation by using the different swelling degrees of graphene interlayers depending on solvents, which is the first case among graphene-based membranes. Dae Woo Kim, a professor at yonsei university, said, “The use of conventional commercialized polymer or ceramic based-membranes is highly limited because of slow solvent permeances and instability of polymer structure in long-term operation. This study proved that graphene-based material is highly effective for membrane fabrication because the size of commercial membrane modules can be reduced by 1000 times or more by the over 1000 times faster solvent permeances of nanoporous graphene than existing polymer or ceramic. The highly crystalline nanoporous graphene we developed is expected to be able to be used not only in membranes, but also in various fields such as catalyst support, conductive materials, and supercapacitor electrodes.” This research was conducted with Researcher Junhyeok Kang (1st author) of professor Dae Woo Kim’s research team with the support of the new researchers support project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the industrial technology base center fostering pilot project promoted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, and the university focuse research institute support project promoted by the Ministry of Education. Prof. Il Moon’s team at Yonsei University developed an artificial intelligence framework for fault detection and diagnosis in chemical processes.
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (IF 11.648)에 게재되었다. Yonsei University’s department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Il Moon’s research team with Ewha Womans University developed an artificial intelligence based framework for fault detection and diagnosis of chemical processes. Process monitoring is important for ensuring operational reliability and preventing occupational accidents. In recent years, data-driven methods such as machine learning and deep learning have been preferred for fault detection and diagnosis. Professor Il Moon’s research team proposed a new fault diagnosis method using explainable artificial intelligence to break the traditional trade-off between the accuracy and interpretability of deep learning model. First, an adversarial auto-encoder model is built to achieve the superior fault detection performance. Then the autoencoder model interpreted through the integration of Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) with a combined monitoring index. Using SHAP values, a diagnosis is conducted by allocating credit for detected faults, deviations from a normal state, among its inputvariables. The developed framework was applied to two chemical process systems and compared with conventional diagnosis methods. The results highlight that the proposed method achieves the exact fault diagnosis for single and multiple faults and, also, distinguishes the global pattern of various fault types. In particular, the developed framework breaks the limitation that decisions generated from deep-neural-network-based models are difficult to interpret and cannot provide explanatory insight to users. The results of this study are expected to accelerate data-based process monitoring research. This strudy conducted with Researcher Kyojin Jang (co-first author) of Professor Il Moon’s research team. Yonsei University’s department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Jong Hyeok Park's research team investigated crystal phase transition of α-FAPbI3 at α-FAPbI3/SnO2-x interface within the presence of oxygen vacancies in SnO2-x. MAPbI3 (MA denotes methylammonium) was selected as the photoactive material in the early stage of perovskite solar cell (PSC) research. However, MAPbI3 shows poor thermal stability due to high volatility of the MA organic cation. Replacing the MA organic cation with a FA (FA denotes formamidinium) was suggested to resolve the thermal stability issue. Additionally, FAPbI3 holds higher potential for high-efficiency solar cells with a broader photo-response range in the solar spectrum than MAPbI3. However, fabricating FAPbI3 thin film is more challenging than MAPbI3 since FA exhibits larger ionic size (2.56 Å) than MA (2.17 Å), making incorporation of FA into PbI6 octahedra difficult. In conventional perovskite solar cells, the perovskite layer usually forms an interface with an electron transport layer (ETL). The compatibility of the materials forming the interface is significant for separating charge from the perovskite with minimal loss. Nevertheless, although stabilizing FAPbI3 in a bulk manner is widely studied, stabilizing FAPbI3 at the interface is relatively overlooked. Stabilizing FAPbI3 at the interface is more important since the interface contains a high portion of structural defects, compared with the bulk, almost 100-fold. Unfavorable phase, such as δ-phase FAPbI3 and PbI2, formed at the interface will hinder the charge extraction process from FAPbI3 to the transport layer, similar to defects. In the case of FAPbI3/SnO2-x, Sn and O are the key atoms for stabilizing the PbI6 octahedron and organic cation, respectively, which affects the growth of the perovskite at the interface. Oxygen vacancies in the surface of SnO2-x can cause distortion of the perovskite structure at the interface, inducing unfavorable phases, such as the δ-phase, PbI2, or other unknown phases. Jong Hyeok Park’s research team systematically studied the formation of δ-phase FAPbI3 and PbI2 induced by oxygen vacancies of the SnO2-x surface at the FAPbI3/SnO2-x interface. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Jong Hyeok Park’s research team observed PbI2 segregation and δ-phase FAPbI3 formation adjacent to SnO2-x. The generation of iodine interstitials at the interface was revealed as the driving force of the unfavorable phase transition. The absence of oxygen atoms interacting with tin atoms lowered the energy barrier for iodine interstitial generation almost by half, and the iodine interstitials accelerated the unfavorable phase transition of FAPbI3. For the first time, organic cation loss at the FAPbI3/SnO2-x interface was also observed as a severe drawback to forming an ideal heterojunction. Oxygen vacancies in the SnO2-x surface, which act as hydrogen bonding sites for FA cations, induced withdrawal of FA cations, which was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Inspired by this phenomenon, Jong Hyeok Park’s research team fabricated a SnO2-x layer with reduced oxygen vacancies by using oxidized black phosphorus quantum dots. The multiple P=O bonds of oxidized black phosphorus quantum dots effectively assisted the formation of a SnO2-x layer with minimal oxygen vacancies. After P=O passivation, most of the detrimental effects were mitigated, showing highly stable α-FAPbI3 crystal structures. Consequently, Jong Hyeok Park’s research team achieved a maximum PCE of 23.43% with enhanced thermal and operational stability. Professor Jong Hyeok Park of Yonsei University replied, “Mitigating oxygen vacancies in SnO2-x has been widely studied. However, the true need of the mitigation was not investigated which stresses the novelty our work. Not only did we investigate the unfavorable phase transition of α-FAPbI3 at α-FAPbI3/SnO2-x interface, we also offered thorough passivation strategy of oxygen vacancies by using oxidized black phosphorus quantum dots.” This research was conducted with Researcher Jung Hwan Lee (first author) of Professor Jong Hyeok Park’s research team with the support of Yonsei Signature Research Cluster Program of 2021, Yonsei-KIST Convergence Research Program, and National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grants funded by the Korea Government (MSIT). Prof. Han’s research team at Yonsei University successfully designed a solid electrolyte of outstanding performance for Li-ion batteries using cost effective doping element to a halide crystal.
Prof. Han’s research team at Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in Yonsei University (President Seung-Hwan Seo) developed a solid electrolyte of outstanding performance for Li-ion batteries using cost-effective elemental doping to a halide crystal.Due to several extraordinary properties compared to organic liquid-phase counterpart, such as leakage-free, inflammable and chemically stable nature, the solid electrolytes for Li-ion batteries have been intensively studied as the alternatives. A halide-based solid material was known as a promising candidate because of its exceptional chemical and mechanical stability, and wide electrochemical window. However, it is fabricated using rare earth metals.Prof. Han and his students achieved outstanding ionic conductivity (2.72 mS/cm) via cheap Fe doping to the halide electrolyte. The conductivity is by far higher than conventional one(~ 1.0 mS・cm-1). Using first-principles calculations they elucidated underlying mechanism of the good ionic conductivity to obtain a design principle for even better solid electrolyte fabrication. It was clearly demonstrated that the dopant Fe creates multiple diffusion channels for Li-ion transport in the crystal. Furthermore, activation energy barrier for the diffusion was substantially reduced, contributing to the high ionic conductivity. They identified that an optimal Fe doping concentration is about 20% of all elemental compositions.Prof. Han mentioned: "as the demand for energy storage devices and electric vehicles increases, developing solid-state batteries with stability is receiving great attention. The halide-based solid electrolyte is an inorganic electrolyte material capable of solving disadvantages of other solid electrolytes, but an understanding of Li-ion transport mechanism was still insufficient. Our study clearly unveils underlying mechanism and how to further crank up the performance based on first-principles design approach.“This research was conducted by undergraduate student S. 연세대학교 화공생명공학과 배윤상 교수 연구팀은 대용량 분자모사를 이용하여 라돈 흡착에 적합한 고성능 흡착제를 개발하였고, 개발한 흡착제의 라돈 제거 성능을 실험적으로 입증하였다. Prof. Youn-Sang Bae’s research team from department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, Yonsei university developed highly efficient adsorbents for radon capture using large-scale molecular simulations and experimentally validated its radon removal performance. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous materials synthesized by self-assembly of metal centers and organic ligands. Since their surface properties and pore sizes can be designed according to the desired purposes, they have been considered as next-generation adsorbents, catalysts, sensors, etc. However, it is very challenging and time-consuming to screen a proper MOF among thousands MOFs for a desired application. In this study, a high efficient radon adsorbent was successfully developed in quick time using large-scale molecular simulations. As a result of grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations performed on 4951 MOFs in CoRE (Computation-Ready, Experimental) MOF database, Al-NDC was selected as a potential adsorbent for radon capture. The Al-NDC exhibited superior radon removal performance, which was more than twice higher than a commercial adsorbent, activated carbon. Al-NDC also showed superior hydrothermal, radioactive and chemical stabilities. This is a remarkable result, suggesting that Al-NDC is a promising adsorbent for radon capture. Moreover, this study provides various correlations between MOF structural properties and radon adsorption performances. These will be useful guidelines for the future development of radon adsorbents.
A research team led by Professor Daewoo Kim of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the College of Engineering has developed the metal organic framework-based separation membrane for hydrogen/carbon dioxide separation with the highest performance, realizing a technology that can contribute to blue hydrogen-based research and securing original technology. Since January 2019, the government in KOREA has announced various policies to transition from a carbon economy to a hydrogen economy, such as the ‘Hydrogen Economy Revitalization Roadmap’ and the ‘1st Hydrogen Economy Implementation Basic Plan, 2021’ to become a leading country in the hydrogen economy. At the same time, the “carbon neutral scenario” was confirmed in 2021, firmly expressing the will to achieve the carbon neutral goal and realize the hydrogen economy. As the establishment of a hydrogen supply chain is selected as a major energy policy goal, the importance of the hydrogen economy is further emphasized. Ultimately, the importance of green and blue hydrogen is increasing to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, but since Korea is relatively weak in the field of blue hydrogen, more active research is needed to develop and distribute CCUS technology. Accordingly, Professor Daewoo Kim's team developed a high-performance hydrogen separation membrane that can contribute to the development of CCUS technology. The developed membrane can selectively transmit only hydrogen when pressurized, so it can save energy and effectively reduce facility costs, unlike conventional absorption and adsorption methods. To manufacture a high-performance separator, the research team implemented a metal-organic framework-based single separator through precise pore control in the Armstrong (Å) unit. The metal-organic framework used here is a material called ZIF-8, and theoretically has pores of 3.4 Å, but actually stretches to a size of 4.0 Å. The reason for this phenomenon is that the molecules constituting the pores of ZIF-8 can move freely, and the molecules move as if a door opens when gas passes through (Gate-opening effect). However, since it is impossible to separate high-purity hydrogen (2.9 Å) and carbon dioxide (3.4 Å) with these existing pore sizes, ZIF-8 pore control is required. Accordingly, the research team attempted to control pores using graphene nanoribbon materials, one of the carbon materials. Graphene nanoribbons are materials made through oxidation of carbon nanotubes. By introducing graphene nanoribbons, the movement of molecules present in pores was suppressed to develop a metal-organic framework-based separator with a theoretical pore size. In particular, the key to this research is that the crystal structure itself is made solid due to the interaction between the sp2 carbon domain included in the graphene nanoribbon and the zinc atom included in ZIF-8. By suppressing the pore opening of ZIF-8, the pore size was maintained at 3.4 Å even when gas entered. In addition, by reducing the binding force between the membrane support and the graphene nanoribbon, the interaction between the graphene nanoribbon and ZIF-8 was increased, and as a result, the movement of the pore molecule was suppressed as much as possible. “As the importance of the hydrogen economy for carbon neutrality is gradually emerging, the demand for high-performance separators is also increasing. Accordingly, research on metal-organic framework-based separators is being actively conducted, but there has been no research on controlling the pore size of metal-organic frameworks using carbon materials.” We have secured the original technology, and it is expected that the pore size of the metal-organic framework can be adjusted according to the target gas by expanding to various materials in the future.” This research was supported by the new researcher support project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the industrial technology base center fostering pilot project promoted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. Professor Sangwoo Lim's team at Yonsei University developed high selective Si3N4 etchant for 3D NAND structure
Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor SangWoo Lim's research team developed the high selective Si3N4 etchant from 3D NAND structure. 3D NAND structure can solve the limitation of horizontal integration by vertically stacking 2D NAND structures to improve memory density. 3D NAND flash memory has the advantages of low power consumption, fast writing performance, and longevity; thus, it is used in storage devices such as solid-state drives and mobile phone memory. In order to fabricate 3D NAND flash memory, Si3N4 layers should be etched compared to poly-Si and SiO2. In general, selective Si3N4 etching process is performed using 85% H3PO4 solution above 160 °C. However, since poly-Si and SiO2 can be etched in H3PO4, it is required to increase the Si3N4 to poly-Si and Si3N4 to SiO2 etching selectivity as compared to those of conventional 85% H3PO4. The selective Si3N4 etchant developed by Professor Sangwoo Lim’s team at Yonsei University suppressed the etching of poly-Si and SiO2 by adding an additive to H3PO4 solution. Additives with epoxy or vinyl group selectively adsorbed on the surface of poly-Si and suppressed the etching of poly-Si. Accordingly, Si3N4/poly-Si etching selectivity considerably increased from 7.5 (no additives) to 24–76. By adding Si-based materials with epoxy or vinyl group to H3PO4, the etchings of SiO2 as well as poly-Si were suppressed, and high selective Si3N4 etching process was performed. Therefore, Si3N4/poly-Si etching selectivity considerably increased (300-3500 %) and Si3N4/SiO2 etching selectivity also significantly increased (300- 800 %). The research team suggested the mechanism of suppression of poly-Si and SiO2 etching by the Si-based materials with epoxy or vinyl group. Previous studies on 3D NAND etching process have predominantly focused on controlling the etching reaction of Si3N4 and SiO2 in H3PO4 solutions, whereas the suppression of poly-Si etching in H3PO4 solutions has rarely been addressed. However, this study suggest the additive capable of suppressing the etching of SiO2 and poly-Si simultaneously. The key point of this study is designing additives which can passivate the poly-Si surface to suppress the poly-Si etching. Also, containing the Si-O bonds in their molecular structure, which can suppress the SiO2 etching by the Le-Chatelier principle. Professor Sangwoo Lim of Yonsei University replied, “In the non-memory semiconductor market, many studies are being conducted to develop high-stack 3D NAND flash memory devices. Selective Si3N4 etching is one of the most important processes to fabricate 3D NAND flash memory, and it is an extremely difficult process since it requires both high Si3N4 etching selectivity compared to poly-Si and SiO2 and facilitated mass transfer of etchants. Through this research, we have secured the core technology for selective Si3N4 etching that has a high Si3N4 etching selectivity compared to poly-Si and SiO2, and it is expected that this technology will be applied to the manufacturing process of high-stack 3D NAND flash memory.” This research was conducted with Researcher Taegun Park (first author), Taehyeon Kim (second author) and Changjin Son (third author) of Professor Sangwoo Lim’s research team with the support by the SK hynix. Professor Yoon Seok Jung’s team at Yonsei University developed an aluminium-based low-cost sodium solid electrolyte material
Professor Yoon Seok Jung`s research team (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Yonsei University) has developed an aluminium-based low-cost sodium solid electrolyte material. This material is expected to lower the price of sodium solid-state batteries and help to avoid the interfacial resistance evolution due to side reaction. Commercially available lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) adopt organic liquid electrolytes. Once ignited, the organic liquid electrolytes can easily catch fire, and they cannot be controlled where the fire spreads to the adjacent cell. In fact, ESSs applying lithium-ion batteries have frequent firing accidents. Also, as prices of lithium have risen nearly 10 times over the past 10 years in accordance with the rapidly increasing battery demand, interest in sodium ion batteries is growing.Solid electrolyte is an inorganic material that does not fire, and sodium is the sixth most abundant on the surface, which means no concern about reserves. Therefore, all solid-state sodium ion battery can be applied to the ESS as a next generation battery, which can store electricity safely and with low prices than the existing LIBs. However, all solid-state sodium ion batteries have a problem about high prices of solid electrolytes. In addition, most of them have serious decomposition problem at high voltages, detrimental to long-term cycling. 3 to 4 V high voltage operation is essential to realize a high energy density, and power density. Recently, halide based solid electrolytes materials have been studied, which is stable even at high voltages. However, most of them use expensive rare earth metal elements, which makes commercialization difficult. To overcome these limitations, a research team designed a solid electrolyte for a high voltage all solid-state battery using earth-abundant element. A solid electrolyte material using aluminium, the third most earth abundant element on the earth crust, was developed and all solid-state battery with 3V class high voltage and stable cycling of 500 cycle was shown. NaAlCl4, a new sodium solid electrolyte, was previously used as a molten salt electrolyte in a ZEBRA-type battery operated in a high temperature environment, and this research. The significance of this study is that NaAlCl4 was firstly used as a solid electrolyte at room temperature. The sodium ion conduction mechanism in the solid electrolytes was also identified through X-ray diffraction and bond valence energy calculation. In the crystal structure of NaAlCl4, sodium forms a NaCl6 prism, and Na ions have been found to move through 1D or 2D paths. Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Jinkee Hong's research team developed the newly designed human activity-driven hair follicle electrical stimulation system. Hair loss (Alopecia) is a symptom that can occur not only in men but also in women, and at various ages. This is a symptom caused by various reasons such as contraction of the hair root and deterioration of hair follicle formation, and various hair loss related products are being developed to solve the problem. In addition, various studies have been reported that can solve the problem not only through chemical treatment but also through various physical stimulation methods such as ultrasonic wave treatment. In particular, a study has recently been reported to promote the growth and activity of human dermal papilla cells present in the hair roots by applying electrical stimulation to the hair scalp. However, electrical stimulation applied to the hair scalp has disadvantages such as requiring an extra energy source or applied stimulation from the outer part of hair scalp. Prof. Jinkee Hong’s research team had overcome the disadvantages of the previous hair scalp electrical stimulation system and developed a system that can promote hair growth as well as new hair follicle formation. By using the electric field that is simultaneously generated and lost in daily life as an energy source, have overcome the limitations of physical or daily discomfort, which electrical energy could transmit through the human body and applies internal electrical stimulation of the scalp instead of the outer stimulation. The research team firstly confirmed the system through 3D simulation that when conductor and an insulator are adjusted to a unique structure, a potential difference could occur, and stimuli can be transmitted through the human body. To experimentally verify the result of simulations, various types of objects such as conductive gel, cap, and hairpin were designed. When worn each object, it was confirmed that an electric field was formed in the part of worn through various activities of the human body (walking, running, using a laptop, etc.). The system forms a stable electric field without being affected at all in various states of the hair. In particular, the core of this study is that, like the existing hair electrical stimulation system, it promotes the proliferation of various cells existing in hair follicles and the release of growth factors, but it could promote new hair follicle formation. Through animal experiments, it was experimentally verified that the number of newly formed hair follicles increased according to various electrical stimulation outputs (electric fields generated from walking or running), which was caused by the synthesis of various growth factors involved in hair follicle growth. Professor Jinkee Hong of Yonsei University replied. “Hair loss is not a serious disease, but it is a symptom that can remain as a lifelong trauma. Existing studies on treating hair loss have focused only on promoting hair growth, and have not found an answer to the actual symptom of hair loss, the new generation of hair follicles. Through this study, the newly developed scalp electrical stimulation system presented the possibility of fundamentally overcoming hair loss symptoms without any discomfort in daily life.” This research was conducted with Researcher Sungwon Jung (co-first author) of Professor Jinkee Hong’s research team and Researcher Deokjae Heo (co-first author) of Professor Sangmin Lee’s research team in Chung-Ang University with the support of the Bio & Medical Technology Development Program of the National Research Foundation, Korea Medical Device Development Fund grant and Korea Drug Development Fund. Professor Sang-Young Lee’s team at Yonsei University developed aqueous zinc-ion batteries with high safety, cost-competitiveness and cycling stability
Professor Sang-Young Lee's research team at Yonsei University developed an aqueous zinc (Zn) ion battery, which has high safety, cost-competitivness, and cycling stability than conventional lithium-ion batteries through an international joint research with Sang kyu Kwak's team (Korea University) and Stefano Passerini's team (Karlsruhe University). This research is expected to contribute to improving the cycling stability and safety of large-capacity energy storage systems (ESSs). Also, it is meaningful in that it presented a new electrolyte design principle for the commercialization of Zn-ion batteries. In order to cope with an ever-increasing energy demand and climate change issues, research on next-generation rechargeable batteries that are inexpensive and safe has been extensively conducted for use in large-capacity energy storage systems that can solve future environmental and energy problems. However, lithium-ion batteries, which currently lead the market, encounter challenges such as global supply issues, high manufacturing costs, and safety problems. As an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, Zn-ion batteries, which are based on the electrochemical storage mechanism of Zn ion, garnered attention. Zn-ion batteries use Zn metal, one of the abundant and inexpensive metal resources on the planet, as an anode and water-based electrolyte. Thus, they are safer and more cost-competitive than lithium-ion batteries. However, Zn metal anode has difficulty in commercial use due to several challenges. First, the Zn anode corrodes in a water-based electrolyte, and hydrogen gas is generated due to the reductive decomposition of water, increasing the internal resistance. Second, the Zn dendrite growth occurs during repeated charge/discharge, resulting in a sharp decrease in efficiency and a short-circuit of the battery. To solve these problems, surface modification or zinc complexation processes have recently been proposed to limit contact between water and Zn, but there are restrictions due to complex processes and high manufacturing prices. Also, various electrolyte materials that can lower the reactivity of water are being researched, but they cannot meet to the commercialization level due to the battery life limit. To overcome these limitations, Professor Lee Sang-young's research team developed a biphasic electrolyte tailored to Zn-ion batteries. Two types of electrolytes that coexist without being mixed like water and oil are called biphasic electrolytes, which are optimized for working environments of cathode and anode by controlling the interaction between molecules in the electrolyte. The biphasic electrolyte of this work effectively suppressed corrosion and dendritic growth of the zinc anode, resulting in high charging/discharging efficiency of 99.6%, and simultaneously improved the reaction kinetics of the cathode. It also enabled rapid ion transfer in the electrolyte. Consequently, Zn-ion batteries have excellent cost-competitiveness, and have three times higher cycle life (86.6% capacity retention after 3500 cycles) than conventional lithium-ion batteries, demonstrating the practical commercialization of Zn-ion batteries. Professor Sang-young Lee said, "This study not only improved the energy density and life span of Zn-ion batteries using Zn and aqueous electrolytes, which are free from global raw material supply chain issues, but also suggested a new direction for electrolyte design that can maximize battery performance." Professor Jeong Ho Cho's team at Yonsei University developed an artificial nervous system that mimics human motor control
Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Jeong Ho Cho's research team developed a novel artificial nervous system that mimics human motor control through joint research with Professor Se Hyun Kim (Konkuk University) and Juyoung Kim (Gangwon National University). This study emulates the movement of human muscles through artificial synapses and opens the possibility of future healthcare and soft robotics that integrates artificial synapses with artificial body parts (prosthetic arms, etc.). The basic unit of human muscle movement is reciprocal inhibition. Reciprocal inhibition is a mechanism of relaxation by inhibiting the activation of antagonist muscles when they act on an agonist muscle. For example, when performing an arm bending motion, it is possible to create a smooth and continuous movement by contracting the biceps muscle, which is the agonist muscle, and at the same time relaxing the triceps muscle, the antagonist muscle. An 'artificial nervous system' that mimics the movement of these muscles is attracting attention as it can serve as the basis for soft robotic technologies including prosthetic limbs. Researchers around the world are conducting research to simulate the efferent nervous system through artificial synapses, but most of them are limited to unit devices and have not reached the construction of a system with actual functions. The artificial synapse is a semiconductor device that mimics a human biosignal transmission system and is advantageous for biomimetic in that it can process parallel and analog signals and receive input signals in the form of pulses. In particular, it is attracting attention as a next-generation artificial intelligence semiconductor because of its great advantages in terms of energy consumption and device integration. Based on these artificial synapses, Professor Jeong Ho Cho's team emulated the process from which a signal coming down from the precentral gyrus of the brain moves a muscle. They developed an excitatory synaptic circuit and an inhibitory synaptic circuit, respectively, by connecting an artificial synapse and a load transistor in series using the different characteristics that appear depending on the heat treatment temperature of the organic/inorganic hybrid insulator. They developed a system that shows muscle movement by connecting excitatory and inhibitory signals from each circuit to a soft actuator that mimics a muscle. The fabricated system is similar to human motor control in that it receives input signals in the form of pulses. In particular, it is possible to precisely control the range, direction, and speed of the soft actuator movement by adjusting the intensity, sign, and frequency of the input pulse. In order to implement a control system with the same function through the existing CMOS-based semiconductor device, numerous transistors and circuit components are required. Furthermore, it is a technology that is the basis for more complex biomimetic studies in the future because it allows a simpler circuit to be manufactured through the ability to simultaneously control the agonist and antagonist muscles with a single input signal, rather than separately. Professor Jeong Ho Cho said, “This study is the first study to create an artificial synapse as a logic circuit with functionalities, which can present the direction for the development of electronic devices”.
