Professor Jinkee Hong’s team at Yonsei University developed a silk fibroin tissue adhesive stable under hydration conditions
Professor Jinkee Hong’s research team (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Yonsei University) has implemented a technology that suppresses the water responsivity of silk fibroin. Moreover, they have developed a silk fibroin-based tissue adhesive that maintains strong adhesion even when exposed to body fluid. In nature, insects (e.g., spiders and silkworms) secret silk fibroins with superior mechanical properties comparable to engineering steels. Therefore, silk fibroins are being employed in various fields, such as organic electronics. However, remarkable progress in silk fibroin-based biomedical applications is hardly observed. It is attributed to the hydration-adaptive crystallization that silk fibroin becomes crystallized when exposed to fluid. When silk fibroin is implanted into the patient’s body, the original physical/biochemical characteristics are lost, resulting in unpredictable side effects. Professor Jinkee Hong’s team established a stunning strategy to improve silk fibroin itself, not to introduce external compounds, in order to the possibility of silk fibroin. Hydration-adaptive crystallization occurs spontaneously because silk fibroin is a protein composed of amino acids. The research team overcame this inevitable phenomenon through a strategy to activate serine, which exists in < 6% of silk fibroin. They confirmed that the crystallization rate decreased by > 50% when the activity of serine increased by 30%. In addition, a new property of silk fibroin was identified: the activated serine stabilizes the crystallization-triggering water molecules and reduces the hydration-adaptive crystallization rate. In particular, the crystallization results in a significant loss of adhesive force. In the case of natural silk fibroin with fast hydration-adaptive crystallization, adhesive force is reduced by more than 80% in just two minutes of hydration. On the other hand, serine-activated silk fibroin presented stronger adhesive force than commercial tissue adhesives, and the loss ratio was less than 20%. Stable adhesion performance was maintained in daily life (e.g., hand washing) after attachment to human skin. Furthermore, it showed robust adhesive force to all soft tissues (e.g., pig skin, bovine pericardium), and at the same time, soft detachment without any trauma was confirmed, suggesting that the optimal tissue adhesive for the various biomedical industries was developed. Professor Jinkee Hong’s team established an academic cornerstone to adopt silk fibroin in the biomedical fields. This study is impressive in controlling the spontaneous phenomenon of proteins through amino acid activation. Professor Jinkee Hong anticipates that this approach could be expanded to various fibrous proteins (e.g., collagen, keratin) and open a new biomedical technology. Professor Seungjoo Haam’s team at Yonsei University developed cell-mimetic biosensors to detect avian influenza virus via viral fusion
Professor Seungjoo Haam’s research team in the Department of Chemical and biomolecular engineering at Yonsei University is conducting research on developing advanced nanostructure-based diagnostic, treatment and prevention technologies as a strategy to respond to the epidemic of infectious diseases. There is a continuous outbreak of new strains of infectious diseases, and in particular, enormous damage to poultry due to avian influenza has been reported, which increases the economic and industrial burden. This research team has developed a technology for on-site diagnosis of high/low pathogenic avian influenza virus using in vivo infection-simulating nanostructures. This technology was designed as a nanostructure that mimics the structure of a host cell based on the understanding of the virus's cell penetration mechanism and was implemented to detect the interaction between the nanostructure and the virus with an optical signal. In order to minimize the high sensitivity detection and non-specific reaction of influenza virus, the rigidity of the nanostructure was adjusted, and the applicability in the actual detection environment was evaluated to confirm the improved sensitivity and specificity compared to the commercialized rapid diagnostic kit. In addition, by utilizing the enzyme-specific cell infection activity, which is one of the characteristics that can distinguish the pathogenicity of influenza, as a detection index, high pathogenicity and low pathogenicity discrimination of avian influenza, which cannot be differentiated by existing commercial diagnostic techniques, was implemented. Therefore, through this study, it is possible to not only detect avian influenza, but also to differentiate pathogenicity to take more effective quarantine measures, and it is expected that the effect of reducing the damage of infectious diseases through the advancement of the quarantine system can be expected. Professor Jong Hyeok Park’s team at Yonsei University developed a nanopatterned perovskite films
Yonsei University’s department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Jong Hyeok Park's research team developed nanopatterned halide perovskite-based photodetector exhibiting external quantum efficiency (EQE) over 100% under low light intensity operation. Halide perovskite is composed of inorganic lead halide clusters with organic cations, which exhibits high light absorbing coefficient and proper photophysical properties for developing state-of-the-art optoelectronic devices such as photovoltaics, LEDs and photodetectors. As a strategy to overcome its intrinsic instability against moisture, light and air, nanopatterning process has been utilized. However, the application of nanopatterning process on halide perovskites is been limited into single phase materials so far. Through developing nanopatterned halide perovskite films with mixed components, Professor Jong Hyeok Park’s team reports modified intrinsic property of halide perovskite films and its applicability enabled by engineering surface morphology. With versatile nanopatterning process, crystallographic, optical and bending resistance of the films are observed to be improved, which leads to increased performance of photodetectors. The nanopatterned perovskite film-based photodetector exhibited improved responsivity, especially under low light intensity conditions. Under 1 μW/cm2 illumination, the EQE value was dramatically increased to over 100%, which implies modification of charge carrier dynamics of the films induced by film property changes. With PL analysis, photocurrent generation mechanism was suggested as charge carrier separation and extraction to the electrode is facilitated after the process. As well as improved photoelectric property, air, photo and bending stability were also examined to be increased attributed to engineered grain size and surface morphologies. In particular, the core of this study lies in scrutinizing the effect of pressure, a major thermodynamic property of phase transition of material, exerted during nanopatterning process. As pressure is applied during crystallization of halide perovskite, intrinsic property of halide perovskite can effectively be modified compared to the physical punching onto fully-crystallized films. As nanopattern mold confines the grain growth area during crystallization, tailored crystallographic property, lattice characteristics, was observed, which ultimately influences electronic and optoelectronic property of halide perovskites. Professor Jong Hyeok Park of Yonsei University replied, “Although nanopatterned halide perovskite film has been reported, the versatile nanopatterning process has limitedly been applied into single phase materials. Considering the bandgap tunability of halide perovskites according to the component changes, application of nanopatterning process on mixed halide perovskites can expand its applicability for developing high-performance optoelectronic devices. As intrinsic property of halide perovskites through nanopatterning process has been investigated, various films and devices could be developed.” This research was conducted with Researcher Do Hyung Chun (co-first author) of Professor Jong Hyeok Park’s research team with the support of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), granted financial resource from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Professor Sang-Yup Lee and Byungchan Han's team at Yonsei University developed a 'Natural Enzyme Mimic Catalyst' that converts methane into an energy resource
Yonsei University’s (President Seung-hwan Seo) department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professor Sang-yup Lee's research team and Professor Byungchan Han's research team conducted a joint research and developed monoatomic active catalyst using the principle of a metal-organic framework that mimics the active site of a natural enzyme that can directly convert methane to methanol. Methane is known as the main component of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. It is the main component of natural gas, and efforts to utilize it as a future fuel are active. In order to catalyze the conversion of methane into methanol, an energy resource, a process that proceeds at very high temperatures and pressures must be followed. There was a limitation that it required a lot of energy and cost. The research team focused on the fact that a more economical methane conversion process could be developed by developing a catalyst system that mimics the biological structure of pMMO (particulate methane monooxygenase) enzyme, which converts methane to methanol in nature. The catalyst that mimics methane converting enzyme was developed using a metal organic structure that mimics the active site of the enzyme. The active site of the pMMO enzyme consists of a copper ion coordinated structure to histidine amino acid. Conversion of methane into methanol takes place at this site. The research team imitated this active site to form a zeolite-type metal-organic structure composed of an imidazole functional group and metal ions, and then filled the structure with copper ions to produce a catalyst that mimics methane converting enzyme. Through X-ray analysis, it was confirmed that a single copper atom active site with a similar structure to the active site of the enzyme was formed. The research team was able to suggest a mechanism for the conversion reaction of methane expressed at this site. The research result (paper title: Methane partial oxidation by monomeric Cu active center confined on ZIF-7) was published in the Chemical Engineering Journal, an international journal in the field of chemical engineering, with the support of the C1 Gas Refinery Project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 3rd of August.Chemical Engineering Journal (2022) (IF: 13.273)Published: December 15, 2022https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cej.2022.138472

Prof. Youn-Sang Bae’s research team from department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, Yonsei university developed efficient adsorbents and useful structure/property relationships for LNG-ANG coupling process based on large-scale molecular simulations and machine-learning. Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) is a next-generation nanoporous material and comprises of metal clusters and organic ligands. By the combination of various metal clusters and organic ligands, thousands of MOF structures with varied functionality and pore sizes can be synthesized. Due to these attractive properties, MOFs have been considered as potential materials for many applications such as gas separation and storage, catalysis and sensors. Since more than 14,000 MOF structures have been experimentally synthesized until now, it is very challenging and time-consuming to screen proper MOFs for a desired application. In this study, these problems were solved by using large-scale molecular simulations and machine-learning. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on 5,445 MOF structures to evaluate their potential for LNG-ANG process. Then, machine-learning based on the obtained big data suggested DUT-23(Cu) and DUT-23(Co) as efficient adsorbents for the LNG-ANG system. These two MOFs were successfully synthesized and exhibited extremely high methane storage (373cm3((STP)cm-3), which was much higher than the target of advanced research projects agency-energy (ARPA-E) (315cm3((STP)cm-3). This is a great result because there has not been any report about materials exceeding the ARPA-E target goals to the best of our knowledge. Additionally, useful structure/property relationships regarding the adsorbents for natural gas storage were suggested based on the big data obtained from large-scale molecular simulations. These will be helpful for future development of adsorbents for natural gas storage. Professor Byungchan Han’s team at Yonsei University revealed the mechanism for high catalytic performance of diatomic catalysts, exceeding that of Pt/C
Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Byungchan Han's research team with Hong Kong Polytechnic University developed superior diatomic catalyst and revealed the mechanism for boosting its catalytic performance. Commercialized catalyst for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and water electrolyzer is usually made of Pt that is supported on carbon powder. However, the cost of Pt is the main hurdle for wider commercialization of hydrogen powered vehicles. As an alternative, single atom catalyst is suggested owing to its large active surface area and cost-effectiveness. There are, however, drawbacks, such as stability and activity, to be fully commercialized. Professor Byungchan Han's research team designed diatomic catalysts with catalytic properties that exceed those of single atom ones. It shows high stability and tenability in terms of electronic structure; therefore, it can be utilized for not only oxygen related reaction but also many others that are complex. This is also possible as diatomic catalysts can provide multiple active sites side by side. The research team synthesized diatomic catalysts based on Ru that is bi-coordinated with other metals, Co, Fe, and Ni by pyrolysis of metal-organic framework with Ru precursor. The average distance between the atoms was 2.04Å, which indicates capability of engineering catalyst morphology in atomic scale. Ru/Co diatomic catalyst showed the best performance among the others, and the team revealed that the tuned electronic structure of Co was the major factor that affects the overpotential by modulating adsorption energies of intermediates. In particular, the core of this study lies in the mechanism of site-to-site electronic structural tuning towards the best performance. Based on this, many more diatomic catalysts may be synthesized for targeting various reactions. 연세대 한병찬 교수팀, 머신러닝을 이용한 양자화학 계산에서 크기 성질을 보존하는 방법론 제시 -Professor Byungchan Han's team at Yonsei University suggested proper way of making quantum chemical size-extensive machine learning model
Prof. Byungchan Han's research team from chemical and biomolecular engineering, Yonsei University, in collaboration with Prof. Karsten Reuter (Technical University Munich) suggested proper way of implementing size-extensive machine-learning model using global representation. This machine-learning (ML) method is typically used for reducing associated large computational cost in first-principles calculations. In these days, ML is widely used as a surrogate model that substitutes expensive density-functional theory calculation, whose application is limited by small system size and time scale, only with fraction of computational cost. This first step of quantum chemical ML is the transformation of 3D Cartesian coordinate of molecule or material into machine-readable and chemically sensible vector, i.e. representation. However, in the case of global representation, where whole system geometry is encoded into the vector, size-extensivity is not properly preserved in kernel-based ML model. This false implementation is typically not well perceived in many works because their training and test system size are often similar. In this study, we presented that by illustrating different combinations of kernel and representation, ML model can either possess size-extensivity or dramatically fail when trained and tested with different system size. This warns commonly practiced implementation might give error in size-related prediction. Size-extensive aspect of ML is particularly important because when small sized system is trained and used for prediction of large size system, which is general purpose of ML model aiming reduction of computational cost. Only those model with correct size-extensivity will provide accurate prediction result. Design of highly functional water oxidation catalyst in alkaline medium, collaboration of Prof. Han’s group in Yonsei University and Prof. Lee’s
Prof. Byungchan Han’s research team from department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, Yonsei university, collaborating with Prof. Yuanzhe Pioa (Seoul National University) and Prof. Yoon Suk Lee (Hong Kong Polytechque University) developed alkaline water oxidation catalyst that exceeds state-of-the-art efficiency. Compared to water electrolysis in acidic media, that in alkaline media does not require precious metal. However, the activation barrier for water dissociation is relatively huge and so the efficiency is generally lower. Furthermore, the mechanism for water dissociation in alkaline media is not yet clearly revealed, hindering the development of innovative catalyst The research team has suggested a way to overcome the current limitation of alkaline water electrolysis by doping lanthanide element (Sm) into nickel-iron oxide (NiFeO4). Sm-doping reconstructed the surface structure of NiFeO4 and so the reaction intermediates became stable. In addition, the oxygen vacancies induced by Sm-dopant changed the electronic structure of NiFeO4 and facilitated the charge transfer at the interface. The highlight of this research is the significant improvement of catalytic activity using facile lanthanide doping method. This is expected to be applied, not only for NiFeO4, but also many other oxide based catalysts for water electrolysis. Yonsei University’s (President Seung-Hwan Seo) department of chemical and biomolecular engineering Professor Dae-Woo Kim's research team developed the world's best-performing mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for propylene/propane separation. Propylene is the main raw material required for the production of polypropylene, a synthetic resin mainly used for manufacturing food containers, and isopropyl alcohol, which is used for semiconductor production, cleaning IT parts, and disinfectants. High purification is essential in the propylene production process. Among them, the propylene/propane separation process is known to be very arduous. Typically, this process utilizes a distillation method based on the difference in boiling points of two substances, but due to the similar molecular structures, the difference in boiling points is similar within 5°C, requiring a lot of equipment and cost for the separation process. The MMM developed by Professor Daewoo Kim's team at Yonsei University can selectively permeate only propylene so that propylene/propane can be separated without a liquefaction process. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce the energy required for the cooling process thus effectively reducing the facility cost. Theoretically, it is predicted that up to 45% of energy and 73% of equipment cost can be reduced by applying a high-performance separator. The research team synthesized a plate-shaped molecular sieve with a high aspect ratio and implemented by aligning it horizontally in a polyimide-based polymer. Here, the molecular sieve was synthesized based on a zeolite-type metal organic framework (ZIF-8). Because of the characteristic pores of 0.4 nanometers (nm), propylene can permeate but propane does not permeate, making it possible to separate propylene/propane based on the gas molecular size. In particular, the core of this study lies in the template-based phase transition technique that obtains plate-shaped porous particles that were previously only obtained with a three-dimensional isotropic structure. Although various two-dimensional materials such as graphene have been actively studied for the past 10 years, two-dimensional materials with selectivity to hydrocarbons have been reported very limitedly, moreover, materials that can be used for propylene/propane separation have not been reported. In this study, a method of converting a chemically unstable two-dimensional template into a porous structure was used, and a typical ZIF-8 type structure was implemented. Professor Daewoo Kim of Yonsei University replied, “The demand for high-performance separators is growing in various fields such as petrochemistry, hydrogen economy, and energy storage devices. Two-dimensional porous materials are a dream material for realizing high-performance membranes, but only very limited materials have been reported. In particular, there is no material that can be used for hydrocarbon separation, which requires fraction of a size on the order of hundredths of a nanometer. Through this research, we have secured the core technology for synthesizing a separation material with a high aspect ratio, and it is expected that it will be applied to various materials and applications in the future.” This research was conducted with Dr. Ohchan Kwon (co-first author) and Researcher Min-su Kim (co-first author) of Professor Dae-woo Kim’s research team with the support of the Running Together project and the New Researchers Support Project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The research team of Professor Yoon Seok Jung of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Yonsei University developed a new halide-based solid electrolyte (SE) using low-cost Zr and Fe metals. An efficient approach was presented to commercialize all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) that has attracted worldwide expectation as next-generation battery technology that could solve the safety issues and energy density limitation of commercialized lithium-ion battery (LIB) with organic liquid electrolytes. LIB is attracting attention as an energy storage system for an electric vehicle due to its high energy density compared to other secondary batteries. However, LIB based on organic liquid electrolytes has a serious obstacle for application to EV (electronic vehicle) and ESS (energy storage system) such as leakage, firing, and explosion. On the other hand, ASSB cover the advantages of LIB such as high energy density, high efficiency, and usage of inorganic SE with excellent thermal stability. Therefore, ASSB has been evaluated as a next-generation battery system that can solve the safety problems of LIB. Inorganic SEs that are used in ASSBs can be divided into oxide-based, sulfide-based, and halide-based electrolytes. Among them, sulfide SEs have soft mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity of 10 mS/cm, making them as a promising candidate for SE materials. However, sulfide SEs are unstable in humid conditions, and have a narrow electrochemical window, which leads to difficulty in fabrication of batteries with high energy density. On the other hand, a halide-based SE (Li-M-X) has excellent ionic conductivity (0.1 to 1 mS/cm), chemical stability, soft mechanical characteristics, and high voltage stability. High energy density can be achieved with 4V cathode incorporating ASSB using halide SEs. However, metal elements used in the halide-based SE showing higher than 1 mS/cm ionic conductivity are not suitable for commercialization of ASSB because of high prices and environmental pollution during mining. The research team of Professor Yoon Seok Jung comprehensively summarized the recent developments of Li+ and Na+ halide solid electrolytes in the perspective of materials, the crystal structure, ion transfer mechanism, manufacturing process, and prices for commercialization are also dealt with. In particular, the research team fabricated ASSBs using various types of halide SEs such as Li2ZrCl6, Li2+xZr1-xMxCl6 (M = V, Cr, Fe), and Na2ZrCl6 with earth-abundant elements suggesting a pathway for commercialization of high safety and high energy ASSBs Professor Yoon Seok Jung of Yonsei University said, “It is expected that it will be possible to gain competitiveness in Korea ASSB industries in the near future by developing original technologies that include the advantages of both oxide and sulfide materials.” This research was conducted with the support of the Korea Research Foundation, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Yonsei University with Dr. Kwak Hiram (co-author) of Professor Yoon Seok Jung`s research team and S. Professor Sang-Young Lee from Yonsei University(Department of chemical and biomolecular engineering) and his team developed a microgrid-patterned Si electrode as an electroactive Li host. They have devised an efficient way for practical commercialization of next-generation Li metal batteries that can overcome the energy density limitation of existing Li-ion batteries and the breakthrough was described academically in a paper. The ongoing surge in the demand for smart portable electronics, electric vehicles, and large-scale stationary energy storage systems has necessitated the development of high-energy-density batteries with electrochemical longevity. Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries mostly based on graphite anodes are approaching to their performance limits due to the low theoretical capacity(372 mAh/g) of graphite. From this viewpoint, Li metal is highly recognized as a promising alternative anode material due to its extremely high theoretical gravimetric capacity of 3,860 mAh/g, which is almost 10 times of commercial graphite anode. Nevertheless, disordered Li deposition easily causes short lifespan and safety concerns and thus severely hinders the practical applications of Li metal batteries. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to overcome the above-mentioned problems, primarily focusing on controlling the growth of the Li dendrites and attaining uniform Li deposition. Recently, using 3D porous scaffolds to host Li metal during plating/stripping has earned great attention. However, the irrational design of 3D porous scaffolds hinder the stable Li deposition of Li inside the hosts. Moreover, constituents of most of the previously reported Li hosts did not possess redox capacity, resulting in the undesired loss of gravimetric/volumetric energy densities. Here, Lee’s team at Yonsei University presented a new electroactive Li host concept which was designed to induce stable Li deposition inside the porous scaffold while the porous scaffold itself contributes to energy storage. It is noteworthy that a 3D microgrid-patterned scaffold was consisted of silicon anode material, which is capable of charging/discharging Li, to enable stable Li deposition without loss of energy density. As a result, the Li metal battery, assembled with the 3D microgrid-patterned Li metal host and a high-capacity high-nickel(NCM811) cathode, exhibited up to 2 times higher energy-density(644 Wh/kg, 1538 Wh/L) than current Li-ion batteries. Professor Sang-Young Lee of Yonsei University said, “This is the first report to realize an ideal structure of an electroactive Li metal host that is attracting attention with next-generation high-energy electrode technology, and it is expected that this research will contribute to the practical use of Li metal batteries for electric vehicles and ESSs in the future.” This research was conducted with the support of the Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT and future planning. Professor Jeong Ho Cho’s team at Yonsei University developed metal 3D printing technology using an eco-friendly binder
The research team led by Professor Jeong Ho Cho of the Department of Chemical and Biotechnology at Yonsei University and Professor Sae Byeok Jo of the School of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University presented an eco-friendly water-soluble binder that can be applied to binder jetting 3D printing, one of the metal 3D printing technologies. This study proposed the reaction of soluble fruit acid binders in the salt form to form stable metal-chelate bonds between metal particles, opening up new avenues for consumer-level personalized desktop 3D printers with metal 3D printing, which was previously only available in industrial 3D printers. Recent advances in metal additive manufacturing (AM) have provided new opportunities for prompt designs of prototypes and facile personalization of products befitting the fourth industrial revolution. In this regard, its feasibility of becoming a green technology, which is not an inherent aspect of AM, is gaining more interests. A particular interest in adapting and understanding of eco-friendly ingredients can set its important groundworks. Accordingly, researchers from around the world have been conducting research to apply water-soluble eco-friendly binders to binder jetting technology. However, since the binder did not strongly bind the metal particles, the mechanical strength of green bodies was low, making it challenging to produce practically usable objects. This study solved main issues in the development of desktop metal 3D printing technology through the chelation mechanism between metal particle surfaces using an eco-friendly fruit acids binder. The research team demonstrated a water-based solid-phase binding agent suitable for binder jetting 3D printing of metals. Sodium salts of common fruit acid chelators form stable metal-chelate bridges between metal particles, enabling elaborate 3D printing of metals with improved strengths. Even further reductions in the porosity between the metal particles are possible through post-treatments. Compatibility of this chelation chemistry with variety of metals is also demonstrated. Through this study, eco-friendly binder research that can be applied to desktop metal 3D printing technology in the future was suggested. Professor Jeong Ho Cho of Yonsei University replied, “This study developed an eco-friendly binding mechanism to solve the problems of low mechanical strength and structural accuracy of 3D-printed results and suggested the possibility of expanding metal 3D printing technology.” This research was conducted by researcher Soo Young Cho (co-first author) and Dr. Dong Hae Ho (co-first author) of Professor Jeong Ho Cho’s research team, while Yonsei University Professor Jeong Ho Cho and Sungkyunkwan University Professor Sae Byeok Jo participated as co-authors. Professor Seungjoo Haam’s team at Yonsei University developed disease detection technology using hydrogel-based fluorogenic intraocular-lens sensor
A research team led by Professor Seungjoo Haam of the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and a team led by Professor Ji Yong-woo of ophthalmology at Yonsei University announced that they were selected as the ‘2021 Health and Medical R&D Outstanding Performance’ by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute. Professor Seungjoo Ham's research team developed a 'smart intraocular lens (smart IOLs)' that can selectively detect disease-specific biomarkers and was selected for excellent performance. Although IOLs have a very high potential for disease diagnosis, etc., they have been mainly used for cataract treatment and vision improvement. Professor Seungjoo Haam and Yongwoo Ji’s team explored how to use the intraocular lens as a platform to detect disease-related substances, paying attention to the fact that it is in direct contact with the aqueous humor, the liquid inside the eye. The eye is an organ directly connected to the brain. Accordingly, when the liquid biopsy is performed using aqueous humor, it has the potential to detect eye diseases that cause blindness, such as glaucoma, uveitis, and macular degeneration, as well as degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In particular, IOLs are expected to play a major role as a platform for early diagnosis of diseases in that they are being actively used for vision correction and cataract surgery performed in more than 80% of the population over 55 years of age. Based on this, Professor Yongwoo Ji’s team and Professor Seungjoo Haam’s team at the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Yonsei University collaborated to create a fluorescent sensor that can detect biomarkers specific to each disease and mount it on the IOL. The 'smart intraocular lens' developed in this way showed superiority in both diagnostic efficacy and safety for eye diseases, and the research and development were published in 'Biosensors and Bioelectronics (IF 10.62)', a well-known international academic journal in the field of biosensors, and a domestic patent Registration is also complete. Co-first author Professor Yongwoo Ji said, “Since the eye is an extension of the cranial nervous system, it is expected that the diagnosis system will enable early diagnosis of brain diseases through the eyes beyond ophthalmic diseases”. On the other hand, the cases selected for excellence in health and medical R&D by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute in 2021 will be introduced through a case book in the future, and it is also planned to be recommended as a candidate for the ‘100 Best Outstanding Performances in National R&D Projects’ by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
